Accelerating Response to HIV/AIDS and Stigma in the IT sector: A videoconference

Today a large chunk of the employed youth in India is in the service sector such as the Information Technology and Information Technology enabled services (ITeS). There are numerous reasons to believe that they are particularly vulnerable to HIV/AIDS and it hence becomes critical to address the issue of HIV/AIDS at their workplace.

CII, The Indian Business Trust (IBT) for HIV/AIDS and The World Bank Institute (WBI) have come together to enable IT companies to plan and conduct effective HIV/AIDS Stigma reduction intervention in the workplace and community.

The first activity as part of the program organised was a videoconference that was held on 31st May 2007. The videoconference connected 5 cities of Bangalore, Chennai. Mumbai, Hyderabad, New Delhi and Washington DC.

The videoconference was divided into two sessions where IT companies, both large as well as SMEs made presentations on their interventions in the area of HIV/AIDS. They shared how and why they started HIV/AIDS programmes, successful activities within and outside the workplace, obstacles and lessons learnt etc. The presentations were followed by group discussions that concentrated on HIV/AIDS as a business issue and the various activities started by these companies to address stigma and reach young people in workplace and community.

The deliberations concluded with delegates agreeing on having a forum under the aegis of CII and WBI to accelerate their response to HIV/AIDS. It was also suggested that to understand issues in depth, there is a need to conduct a study on the lifestyle of young people. Also, innovative mediums could be used for disseminating information to youth such as developing an animation film on HIV/AIDS, games on AIDS etc.

The videoconference was well attended by over 100 delegates spread across the five cities.
